The city, greatly expanded from the second half of the sixteenth century by the Medici family first and the Lorena later, it was important to free port frequented by many foreign merchants, home to consulates and shipping companies. This contributed to state since the end of the sixteenth century, the multiethnic and multicultural city par excellence characters, of whom survive important remains, such as churches and national cemeteries, palaces, villas and works of public utility inextricably linked to the important foreign community names they attended the free port until the second half of the nineteenth century.
The city is famous for hosting the Shrine of Montenero, dedicated to the Madonna delle Grazie, patron saint of Tuscany, as well as for being the home to prestigious personalities like Amedeo Modigliani.
Livorno is home of the Naval Academy of the Navy, and the command of a regiment of paratroopers Brigade “Thunderbolt” of the Italian Army, the 1st Parachute Regiment Carabinieri “Tuscania”, the 9th Regiment assault paratroopers “Col Moschin” framed in Special forces of the Italian Army and the Special intervention Group of the Carabinieri; also is home to the Maritime Directorate of Coast Guard – Coast Guard.
